Just Say the Word
This morning, during my daily Bible reading, the Gospel reading is from Matthew 8. It recounts Jesus’ interaction with a Roman officer.
A Roman officer comes to Jesus and asks him to heal his servant who has fallen ill. Jesus immediately offers to come and heal his servant.
The centurion’s response is remarkable.
“Lord, I am not worthy to have you come under my roof. Just say the word, and my servant will be healed.”
Jesus marvels at his faith and sends him home. Matthew tells us the servant was healed that very hour.
As I reflected on this passage, three things stood out to me. I hope they bless you!
1. Jesus Welcomes the Outsider
It’s easy to miss just how unusual this interaction would have been. A Jewish rabbi wasn’t expected to stop what he was doing for a Roman officer. Yet Jesus not only receives him, but He also commends him. In fact, Jesus says He has not found faith like this even among Israel.
If you’ve ever felt like an outsider, as if Jesus couldn’t actually receive you, I hope this reassures you that he can.
Sometimes we convince ourselves that we aren’t spiritual enough, mature enough, or put together enough to come to Christ. Yet the officer reminds us that faith, not status, is what Jesus responds to. Even those who feel far away discover that Jesus gladly welcomes those who trust Him.
2. Jesus Doesn’t Need Proximity to Display His Power
The centurion understood authority. As a military officer, he knew that when someone with authority speaks, things happen. Orders don’t require proximity. They require authority.
That’s exactly how he viewed Jesus.
He didn’t need Jesus to walk to his house. He didn’t need a dramatic experience or visible proof. He simply believed that if Jesus spoke a word, that would be enough.
I wonder how often we think differently.
Sometimes we believe we need to feel goosebumps. We think we need to be at church, in the right environment, or experiencing God’s presence in a particular way before He can move.
But Jesus possesses the same creative authority we see in Genesis. The God who spoke creation into existence still accomplishes His purposes through His word. Jesus speaks, and healing comes. Jesus speaks, and salvation comes. Jesus speaks, and life comes.
Maybe we’re trying to bring Jesus into our situation when all we really need is for Him to speak.
3. Faith Believes Jesus Can Move Today
Matthew tells us the servant was healed “that very hour.”
This is where faith becomes difficult because our own experience doesn’t always look like Matthew 8. Sometimes we pray for years before we see an answer.
Sometimes God’s timing doesn’t match ours. We have to trust him.
We live in that tension.
Yet delayed answers should never rob us of present faith. We should still believe that Jesus is able to move today. Not because we’ve earned a miracle or accumulated enough spiritual equity, but because His word is enough.
I don’t know what you’re praying for today.
But I do know this: when Jesus speaks, receive His word with confidence. Because when Jesus speaks, anything is possible.
Sometimes all He has to do is just say the word.
